Widget Death Match, round 2!

by chris on Feb.03, 2009, under Deathmatches

It’s finally here – Widget Death Match round 2!

Before you consider the contestants, a reminder of the results of Widget Death Match round 1: despite his (now discontinued) awesome interactive Star Trek game, Simon lost by concession to Mike’s irie Reggae Widget.

Now, Mike’s back. Initially challenged by Andrew “Wags” W., Mike put together this slick all-in-one widget. Facing such an impressive display of widgetosity, Wags never got up the guts to enter the widget octagon, but young Danny M came out from nowhere with 2 different widgets to challenge Mike: a pirates vs. ninjas game widget and his own brand of all-in-one features.

Now it’s up to you, the judges to decide! If you like a widget, leave a comment in the respective post. We’ll add up the comments and declare a winner soon.

Video, blog, and message board widget

by chris on Feb.03, 2009, under Deathmatches, Widget Sightings

Danny’s quickly become a master of the KickApps App Studio, recently releasing yet another multi-faceted widget. In this case, it’s a combo widget that shows videos, blog posts, and message board discussions from KickDeveloper.com, where Danny helps moderate the message boards and answer questions about, among other things, the KickApps App Studio.

Mike’s “all about me” UGC aggregator widget

by chris on Feb.02, 2009, under Deathmatches, Widget Sightings

Ever wanted a simple Twitter widget, or a Flickr widget that’s styled to match your personality? How about a slick blog widget that you can post on MySpace, Facebook, or any other social network? Why not get all 3 at once, via the KickApps App Studio?

Here’s another one from Widget Maestro Mike Sommers:

Mike explains:

“It’s cool because it allows me to easily import all my activity from Flickr (where I store my photos), Twitter (where I save souls) and Wordpress (where I blog) into my SommersPeople community profile page… Write once, publish everywhere!”

So there’s 1 widget that combines Flicker, Twitter, and a personal blog. Mike then pasted it on his social network profile page, just for good measure.

Grossest widget ever (NSFW-ish)

by chris on Dec.12, 2008, under Deathmatches, Widget Sightings

On Wednesday, on his way home from work, Mike sliced his leg open on a fire hydrant in a freak accident. He came back to the office bandage the 4″ cut, then headed home to get stapled up in the ER, but not before he created this widget (warning: if you click the widget, you will see something very gross):

I guess this was a Mike vs. Fire Hydrant Death Match? If you can’t get enough of KickApps team injuries, check out Mike’s blog for more details, including a video of his wife seeing the cut for the first time. Her commentary is priceless.

Marissa Miller Harley Davidson Widget previews WDM Round 2

by chris on Dec.12, 2008, under Deathmatches

Widget Death Match Round 2 is scheduled for Tuesday, 12/16, and people are getting nervous. Just a quick reminder of how Mike won round 1: through the semi-legitimate practice of spamming the judges with multiple widget entries. As Mike said:

Will this one win? No? How about this one? Or this one?

Ethics aside, the Mike’s tactic makes sense. The KickApps Widget Studio allows Mike to crank out eye-popping Widgets in a few minutes, and he tipped the vote with this (eye-popping) Marissa Miller Harley Davidson Widget:

The clincher was his page that allows you to add any YouTube video to this widget, a great demonstration of widgets’ flexibility and opportunities for personalization.

Mike will be back for WDM Round 2, so stay posted for more Widget Death Grips!

Widget Death Match Round 1 ends. Round 2 begins!

by chris on Nov.23, 2008, under Deathmatches

Round 1 came to an early conclusion as Simon conceded victory to Mike! In Simon’s own words:

Dear Widget Sensei,

Yup, you’re the master, I’m hanging up my mouse in the face of such stiff competition …… ;-)

Yours sincerely “grasshopper”.

What led to this strange reversal of fortune? At the time of this writing (Thursday, November 20th), Simon’s Star Trek widget leads the race with a 5-star rating and 22 votes, while Mike’s Rasta Widget has only 4 stars and 20 votes (surprising, because it draws content from the incredible Dub and Reggae social network.

The answer may lie in Mike’s late second entry, a Marissa Miller Harley Davidson motorcycle widget that may not look like much but allows users to embed their own YouTube video before adding the customized widget to their Myspace profile. Cheating cheater or Sun Tzu strategist? We don’t know! Widget Death Match is a no-holds-barred widget battle to the death, and in this round Mike has miraculously come out ahead. Condolences to Simon for the loss of his paradigm-shifting masterpiece widget.

Next Thursday is WDM Round 2: “Tricksy” Mike gets back in the ring with “Thirsty” John G, who will answer the question “is good hair enough?” Beer may make an appearance in one or more widgets, so bring your stein and a taste for blood!
