Hip Hop Widgets from IVP Widgets
by chris on Nov.28, 2008, under Widget Sightings
Check out these widgets from IVP Widgets’ MixBosses website – all built on the KickApps Widget Studio!
Why these widgets kill
Widget deathmasters, take note: these widgets do everything right – learn their moves or you will end up face down in a pool of widget blood!
- Pitch-perfect design – each widget is branded to the specific hip hop artists
- Embedded video inside the widgets makes them stand out in the crowd
- “Share” widget links invite users to get viral and offer an easy way to add them to your own blog or social networking page
- “More” widget links take users back to the MixBosses page; what’s the point of viral if people don’t know who started it all?
- Make money with widgets – Amazon links can be tied to an Amazon affiliate account, meaning that if you buy a CD from one of those widgets, IVP makes a little cheese
- Bonus features: hip hop wallpapers, AIM icons, and blog feeds transform each of these widgets into a mini-website
Soulja Boy – Bird Walk
Kanye West – Love Lockdown
Young Jeezy – Crazy World
Ludacris featuring T-Pain – One More Drink

Building widgets with custom timeline actions (and a little Palin humor along the way)
by chris on Nov.24, 2008, under Widget Sightings
There’s a cool new feature in the KickApps Widget Studio that allows you to define certain things to happen according to a video player’s timeline. In the example below, there are little “instructional balloons” at 11 seconds, 40, 1:16, 1:52, 1:59, 2:09, 2:30 (interactive, booyeah!), 2:46, 2:54, and 3:09.
Be forewarned: Mike voted for Obama this year.
To create this effect in the KickApps Widget Studio, select the Advanced Video Player component from the stage and click on the “Actions” panel on the Component Pallet. There are a couple new options under the Events label:
- Media Start (make something happen when the video starts)
- Media End (make something happen when the video ends)
- Media Percent Complete (make something happen when the video hits the 10% mark, for instance)
- Media Time Update (make something happen when the video hits the 15 second mark, for instance)
What are you doing with your timeline?
Copy, edit, and reuse any widget

At UndoThisWidget.com, Mike is providing tutorials on how to recreate many of the cool widgets he’s become famous for cranking out. The site includes a tutorial on how to copy a widget from one KickApps site to another.
Widget Death Match Round 1 ends. Round 2 begins!
by chris on Nov.23, 2008, under Deathmatches
Round 1 came to an early conclusion as Simon conceded victory to Mike! In Simon’s own words:
Dear Widget Sensei,
Yup, you’re the master, I’m hanging up my mouse in the face of such stiff competition ……
Yours sincerely “grasshopper”.
What led to this strange reversal of fortune? At the time of this writing (Thursday, November 20th), Simon’s Star Trek widget leads the race with a 5-star rating and 22 votes, while Mike’s Rasta Widget has only 4 stars and 20 votes (surprising, because it draws content from the incredible Dub and Reggae social network.
The answer may lie in Mike’s late second entry, a Marissa Miller Harley Davidson motorcycle widget that may not look like much but allows users to embed their own YouTube video before adding the customized widget to their Myspace profile. Cheating cheater or Sun Tzu strategist? We don’t know! Widget Death Match is a no-holds-barred widget battle to the death, and in this round Mike has miraculously come out ahead. Condolences to Simon for the loss of his paradigm-shifting masterpiece widget.
Next Thursday is WDM Round 2: “Tricksy” Mike gets back in the ring with “Thirsty” John G, who will answer the question “is good hair enough?” Beer may make an appearance in one or more widgets, so bring your stein and a taste for blood!
